Life can be very interesting living in a culture where you do not speak the language. Lots of funny (or humbling) things can happen while trying to communicate. This came today and I thought I would share it. I received an email from a name I didn't recognize with the subject containing a German word. First I headed to google translate or Babelfish to translate the subject heading, I don't want to open any spam mail. I also should mention that it takes me about 4 tries to make sure I have the word spelled correctly in German, it was Elternabend for those who would like to know. I find out that it is OK to open the email b/c the word means parents evening. Oh... the message came from either Micah or Sophia's school. The rest was relatively easy. Copy and paste and hit translate. Yeah for modern technology. This is the beginning of the message...
Love 5 bil-love parents, specialist teachers,
We would like to thank you and you to parents at the evening
Monday, 5 CLOCK IN MARCH, 19:30 CLASSROOM OF CLASS 5 BIL invite.
It brought a smile to my face. The translations are not quite perfect. I think that I'll let Dan go to it... when I asked him he at least knew what the word Elternabend meant! Always an adventure here :)

Dieses ist, dachte gerade lustig, dass wir es die andere Weise herum versuchen würden! Mom said Sophia was doing pretty good with the German....guess I will just stick with English!
Hi Machielas!
I have finally been able to connect. I tried several times and was not successful. We enjoy reading about your adventures. I was particularly struck by the photo of the Babylonian gate as we are studying Daniel at CB this year. Missing you in Ancaster and on Sunday evenings. Arlene
